|Learned from||Flying Bison|
The first airbenders learned from the Sky Bison.
Airbending heavily relies on flexibility and using it to find the path with least resistance. Airbending is primarily a defensive art but is reputed for being one of the more dynamic arts. Airbenders can overwhelm their opponents at once, being able to bombard them with large and powerful attacks that often proved to be fatal. However, due to the pacifist lifestyle the Air Nomads had, such attacks were rarely used.

It is said that the first airbenders learned the art from the Sky Bison, a creature considered sacred to the Air Nomads. The Bison can create large gusts of air by fanning their large beaver-like tail, and as the name would suggest, they can fly without a means of propelling themselves, having no aid of wings or other means of propulsion other than their tails. As well as crafting air bending after them, Air Nomads used the arrow on the top of the Bison's head and tattoo it to themselves, arching over their scalp and onto their forehead. It symbolises the mastery over airbending and is given by the master to the student upon completion of their training. All Air Nomads are airbenders contrary to all other nations due to the high amount of spirituality infused to the inhabitants.
